Herbal Support for a UTI (Urinary Tract Infection)
Those who have experienced one know that UTI's are uncomfortable, painful, troublesome and can even become dangerous.
We have had several inquiries recently about how to deal with a UTI using herbs. While I cannot give medical advice, I thought I would share the herbs I personally turn to when dealing with a UTI.
The antimicrobial properties found in the lomatium root may help to eradicate the bacteria that cause a UTI. If I feel one coming on, I will take approximately 50 drops every hour, for up to 3 days.
Note: If you have never taken a lomatium product before, please download this catalog and read pages 14-16. Lomatium can cause a one-time, full body detox rash in some people when they first take it. I suggest taking our Lomatium Starter Bundle and going through the protocol so that your body is ready for LDM-100 when you need it!
Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea)
This herb is believed to stimulate the immune response. This may help the body defend itself against the invading microbes. I take 15 drops 3x per day when my immune system needs an extra boost.
*With echinacea, it is important to take a break every 6-8 weeks, as the body can develop a tolerance to it.
Mushroom PowerBlend (Reishi, chaga, shiitake, maitake, turkey tail mushroom extracts)
This is a blend of 5 adaptogentic mushrooms that can work together to boost the immune system. I take 2 capsules 2x per day while I am experiencing an infection.
Kidney Cleanse (Hawthorn leaf, corn silk, cranberry, nettle seeds, parsley, red clover and moringa)
A blend of herbs to support and detoxify the kidneys. It contains several compounds that are considered diuretics, which can increase urine output and flush the urinary tract. I take 15-20 drops 2x per day when facing a UTI.
Other herbs that may be useful:
Cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon)Cranberry is perhaps one of the most well-known remedies for UTIs. It contains compounds that can prevent bacteria from adhering to the walls of the urinary tract, making it harder for them to cause an infection. Drinking unsweetened cranberry juice or taking cranberry supplements can be helpful, but avoid cranberry drinks that contain sugar, as sugar can make the problem worse.
Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis)
Marshmallow root contains mucilage, which may sound yucky but is actually a beneficial compound that is often used for soothing irritated mucous membranes. It may provide relief from the burning and pain associated with UTIs. It can form a protective layer on the urinary tract's mucous membranes. Marshmallow is typically consumed as a tea or taken in capsule form.
Disclaimer:
While these herbs offer natural relief and support in the management of UTIs, it's essential to remember that herbal remedies should be considered as complementary treatments alongside professional medical advice and prescribed antibiotics if necessary. UTIs can progress to more severe conditions if left untreated, so always consult a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
